Manuel Pacheco, M.D., is the immediate past Area 1 Representative to the APA Assembly Executive Committee (AEC). He also served as the Area 1 Deputy Representative to the APA AEC after having been the Senior Representative to the APA Assembly of District Branches for the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society.
During his leadership of the Area 1 Council, it became a model for DEI efforts in the APA Assembly including beginning each meeting affirming it is a liberated space, self-reflective statements, and Tribal acknowledgments with regards to the lands where we were meeting. It wasn’t easy or without discomfort at times, but he is quite proud of these Area accomplishments.
Dr. Pacheco is currently Senior Consultant in the Department of Psychiatry of Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Most recently, he was Senior Consultant and Chief of Public Policy and Government Advocacy at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Over the span of almost 15 years prior to these positions, he was service chief for the consultation liaison and emergency psychiatry services at both of these hospitals.
For almost 25 years, he has advocated and cared for disenfranchised and marginalized patients suffering from serious mental illness and substance use disorders. He gained a 360-degree view of the strengths and weaknesses of the mental health and substance use disorder care delivery system in this country.
He has been an advocate for our patients and profession spanning all levels of government whether in Greater Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or United States of America. Another aspect of his advocacy is his appointment to the Board of the APA Political Action Committee.
Dr. Pacheco’s patients are his “True North”. Everything clinically or in terms of advocacy is always framed in the context of what he holds as the only vital question at hand “Are we doing what is best for the patient?”
Dr. Pacheco is a Distinguished Fellow of the APA as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both General Adult and Consultation Psychiatry.
Lastly, he holds academic appointments as Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Adjunct Lecturer at Boston University School of Medicine.
His most prized achievements are the teaching awards granted by medical students and resident physicians he was fortunate enough to take part in training.
